Heinrich Heine, a 19th-century German poet, wrote: “Where one burns books, in the end one will burn human beings.” In Thekla, Germany, people died instantly when they touched the electrified fences that surrounded the compound. The skin burned right off of them. We were seeing our first evidence of the Nazi Holocaust.
