After
de Gaulle laid the wreath, he was put into an open touring
car. I walked along the car slowly as everybody cheered and
yelled. All of a sudden, French Fascist snipers opened up
on de Gaulle. I scurried away, but soon I saw the mob maul
one of the snipers (far left, wearing tie). The man
with the gun wanted to shoot him on the spot. Four years of
German occupation had humiliated Parisians and put them on
edge. They had no sympathy for Fascists in their midst. Other
people protected the sniper, hoping to interrogate him. They
dragged him down the street.
