This and the two images that follow are from the April 1942 trial of 27 members of the French Resistance. The tribunal was composed of German military officers.

Evidence at the trial included what appears to be a timer for a bomb. Whether seized from the defendants or the creation of the prosecution, the device was likely little more than window dressing, for Nazi courts did not subscribe to the legal philosophy of "innocent until proved guilty."

Of the trials's 27 defendants, 25 were sentenced to death; two of the defendants were Jewish. Here, heavily guarded Resistance members leave the courtroom after the trial. Although the verdicts were unhappy ones for the defendants and for the Resistance, they hardly heralded the end of French opposition to the German-controlled puppet government. At about this time collaborationist politician Pierre Laval reinstalled himself--with Hitler's support--as the chief of the Vichy government at about this time, which only spurred heightened Resistance activity.

April 18, 1942: Disgusted with the inability to take Leningrad, Hitler relieves Field Marshal Wilhelm von Leeb of command of German forces in north Russia.

April 20, 1942: At a birthday banquet for Hitler in East Prussia, Hermann Göring announces that he was responsible for the Reichstag fire of February 27, 1933, that set off Nazi reprisals against purported Communist subversion.
