A formal meeting of the Berlin Jewish community is held at the Prinzregentenstrasse synagogue on May 4, 1936, to protest the recent onset of Arab terrorism in Palestine. In spite of their own tenuous legal and economic situation, German Jews remained attuned to events in the Middle East. As governmental efforts to encourage emigration intensified, the Jews of Germany remained painfully aware of the need to keep Palestine and other possible points of destination open to them. Arab-Jewish violence brought pressure on the British government to curtail Jewish immigration into Palestine.

Riots in the Arab city of Jaffa, Palestine, including this melee in June 1936, inaugurated a period of intense social conflict between Arabs and Jews. Caught between the World Zionist Organization's demand for increased Jewish immigration to Palestine and Arab hostility to it, British authorities came under fire from both sides. The Arab-Jewish conflict lasted for three years and resulted in the virtual prohibition of Jewish immigration into the region.

Jewish-owned businesses and homes are set ablaze during an anti-Jewish riot in Minsk Mazowiecki, Poland, in June 1936. A sharp increase in antisemitic activity punctuated Polish-Jewish life in 1936. Pogroms, rallies, and an antisemitic legislative agenda exacerbated Polish-Jewish relations. Increased German economic and military strength convinced many Poles that the time had come to settle their differences with their troublesome Jewish minority. Jews comprised about ten percent of Poland's population.
